The Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Cards from American Express finally returned this fall with their HIGHEST EVER welcome bonuses after offering only cash back when signing up for the card for most of the year.

These cards are typically at their highest only ONCE a year and this is it! So grab it now if you want these cards!

New Points System with Marriott Program Merger

You may remember that SPG and Marriott will merged their programs as of August 2018. When that happened, SPG points, or Starpoints, tripled to put them more in line with the value of a Marriott point and to align with Marriott redemption levels.

American Reduced Mileage Awards Program

JW Marriott Marco Island, When Marriott and SPG programs merged August 1, SPG points tripled.

Previous high welcome offers for these cards were 35,000 points, so if you tripled that, we are close to the highest ever offer for the business card, but the personal card is about 30,000 points short.

Why I Love These Cards

Still, there is A LOT you can do with these points. My two favorite options are:

  • Transfer them to airline miles
  • Use them to book amazing experiences through the SPG Moments program like my family did

By signing up for both the Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express (personal card) and the Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express, amassing 58,000 points total in 2016, I was able to use points for my family to score:

We also transferred points we earned from referring others to the cards in 2017 to British Airways Avios, which we then used to book flights throughout Europe on Aer Lingus (which also uses Avios).

How Many SPG Points Can You Earn?

Starwood credit card

We attended a Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley Field in the SPG Suite using 25,000 Starpoints (before the points triped)!

If you decide to apply for both the SPG personal credit card and the SPG business credit card, here is the breakdown:

Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express (Personal)

  • 75,000 bonus points if you meet the minimum spend requirement of $3,000 in 3 months (see details above)
  • 3,000 points for meeting the minimum spend (1 point per dollar spent)

Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express

  • 100,000 bonus points after a $5,000 minimum spend within 3 months (see details above)
  • 5,000 points for meeting the minimum spend (1 point per dollar spent)

TOTAL: 183,000 Starpoints!!

How Can I Use My Starpoints?

There are SO many great ways to use Starpoints!

Available SPG Moments Experiences

My FAVORITE way to use Starpoints is through the SPG/Marriott Moments Program, which allows you to purchase or bid on various experiences using your Starwood points.

Here are some current SPG Moments where you can use your new SPG points to either “bid” or purchase experiences for a set price.

  • Visit the NFL Network and Attend a Game in LA, 2 tickets, 75,000 Starpoints
  • See Jimmy Kimmel Live! – Current bid 45,000 Starpoints
  • See Keith Urban in concert in New York City – Starting bid 45,000 Starpoints

Here are some other ways you can use your Starpoints:

Transfer Points to Airlines

You can currently transfer Starpoints to more than 40 different airlines at a 3 points to 1 mile ratio.

Current airlines include:

  • Delta
  • United
  • Alaska
  • British Airways
  • Jet Blue
  • Singapore Airlines

This can be a great way to boost your airline miles beyond airline credit card bonuses. Plus, you get a BONUS 15,000 points for every 60,000 points you transfer. That will total 25,000 miles at the 3:1 ratio. We used this option to boost our points needed to fly to Europe by transferring Starpoints to British Airways Avios.

Book Hotels

You can currently book hotel nights starting at 3,000 points per night for a Category 1 hotel, and Starwood also throws in a free fifth night when you book four nights at Category 3-7 hotels with points.

Here’s how the points breakdown shakes out at the moment:

  • Category 1 – 7,500 points
  • Category 2 – 12,500 points
  • Category 3 – 17,500 points
  • Category 4 – 25,000 points
  • Category 5 – 35,000 points
  • Category 6 – 50,000 points
  • Category 7 – 60,000 points
  • Category 8 (Coming in 2019) – 85,000 points

Additionally, you can upgrade your room to a suite.

What Hotels Can I Book Using My SPG Starpoints?

Le Meridien Delfina Santa Monica

Stay at Le Meridien Delfina Santa Monica using your Starpoints!

Starwood owns Le Meridien (a great hotel collection!), Aloft, W Hotels, Element, Westin and Sheraton. You can also book Marriott properties, as well.

Another major perk for SPG members is the ability to use a digital key on your smartphone along with free Wi-Fi.

What to Consider Before Applying for These Cards

Before you apply for these cards, you need to know a few things:

  • You can only apply for these American Express cards and get the welcome offer ONCE in a lifetime, but this is an offer worth getting and you can continue to earn points on the cards in other ways
  • If you need any Chase cards, get those FIRST, because Chase will not approve you if you have gotten five or more new cards in the last 24 months (most business cards don’t usually count toward the 5/24 rule)
  • I always recommend a Chase Southwest personal, Chase Southwest business (these two get you your Southwest Companion Pass), Chase Sapphire Preferred and THEN a hotel card.

To take advantage of these credit card offers, APPLY BEFORE October 31, 2018. The high SPG offers usually only come around once a year, so grab it while you can!

Plus, the sooner you apply, the sooner you can meet your minimum spend, accrue your points and start booking amazing experiences through SPG/Marriott Moments!
