When will Southwest release January, February and March 2020 flights? The airline has currently opened the Southwest Flight Schedule for booking through October 30, 2020, so these flights are now available.
The next release of flights through January 4, 2021, is currently scheduled for May 28, 2020.

These Southwest flight schedule dates have been quite volatile of late, however, with Southwest changing them repeatedly, largely due to the chaos around the pandemic, as well as the MAX 8 grounding, so there’s a GOOD chance that date may change.
The May 28 release date is already the second delay of this scheduled release.

Go to Travel Gal readers were the first to know about the $49 Hawaii flights, which sold out in a matter of hours, as well as a several-hour delay in the release of holiday 2019 flights on May 30!

The airline releases its Southwest flight schedule for new flights every four to eight weeks and usually announces the next release date as soon as the next batch of flights are available.
Things to Know Before Booking
During the holiday release of flights, Southwest did not open Wanna Get Away fares to many destinations due to “demand,” they said; however, these were over holiday periods, which are heavily traveled and typically have expensive fares.
So it’s possible, depending on the route and dates, that Wanna Get Away fares may not be available in any given flight release.
If that is the case, you may want to consider comparing Southwest fares with other airlines. It pains me to say it, but if they’re not offering low prices and someone else is, then…
The one exception here would be if you hold the Southwest Companion Pass, which lets one person fly free with you for up to two years. That can suddenly make these fares affordable if you don’t even have to pay for ONE person in your traveling party!

Also, Southwest will no longer confirm the time that flights will be released on the next release date. Recently, it has ranged between about 7 a.m. t0 9:30 a.m. CT. So one never knows!
Sometimes flights are first available on mobile before desktop or vice versa, so be sure to check both. And they seem to now progressively “roll out” flights so some come online sooner than others.
It’s not the most fun process to check for Southwest flights on a release date, but if you can score a lower fare, it’s worth it!
It’s Easy to Change or Cancel on Southwest!
Keep in mind that there is no fee to change or cancel a flight on Southwest. Watch this video or read below to learn how to change a Southwest flight.
However, if you do cancel a Wanna Get Away fare, and you have paid cash or credit, you will only receive a “credit,” also called an Unused Southwest Travel Fund, back good 12 months for future flights on Southwest.
The better plan is to pay with Southwest points if you have them, because those are instantly credited back to your Southwest Rapid Rewards account. If you don’t have a Rapid Rewards account, set one up today for free by going to Southwest.com and start earning points for your paid flights!
Finding a Good Fare
When you’re looking for new flights on the Southwest release date, check both mobile (via the app) and desktop, as often they’re available on one platform before the other. Most recently, I’ve seen them on my desktop first.
A great place to start your search is at the Low Fare Calendar where you can find the lowest available price for your flight if you are flexible on dates.
Sometimes, if you click into the Low Fare Calendar, you’ll find lower fares than even those advertised in the sale!
Can I Fly to Hawaii?
Yes! Southwest now officially flies to Hawaii, though flights are not currently bookable due to the pandemic. Southwest flies to Oahu, Kauai, the Big Island and Maui. There are now direct flights from San Jose, Sacramento and Oakland with San Diego coming in spring 2020.
Here’s everything you need to know about Southwest Hawaii flights.
An Easy Way to Earn MORE Points to Book FREE Southwest Flights
My FAVORITE travel credit card Chase Sapphire Preferred, whose points can be instantly transferred to Southwest for free flights (though they DO NOT qualify for the Companion Pass).
Earn 60,000 points after spending $4,000 in the first three months of card opening and transfer them at a 1:1 ratio INSTANTLY to Southwest. It does come with a $95 annual fee, but that is FAR less than the value of these points.
Chase Sapphire Preferred also earns double points on dining and travel to help you KEEP earning points for free flights!
Read my full review of this card.
Note: I recommend getting this card AFTER 1 personal and 1 business Southwest card (or 2 business Southwest cards), which can help you quickly earn the Southwest Companion Pass, so one person can fly free with you for up to two years!
Southwest cards include:
- Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Visa card (Personal; 40,000 points after $1,000 minimum spend in 3 months)
- Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier card (Personal; 40,000 points after meeting $1,000 minimum spend in 3 months)
- Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority card (Personal; 40,000 points after meeting $1,000 minimum spend in 3 months)
- Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Business card (60,000 points after a $3,000 minimum spend in 3 months)
- Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business card (70,000 points after a $5,000 minimum spend in 3 months; highest offer currently available on ANY Southwest card in 3 months)

Again, Southwest flights through January 4, 2021 will be released on May 28, 2020. Mark your calendars, but stay tuned to Go to Travel Gal in case that date changes!
