There are some CRAZY ways to earn Southwest points, but this is one of the most unusual. Did you know you can earn Southwest points by paying your electric bill, depending on where you live?

There are many states that have energy companies that partner with Southwest Airlines to allow you to earn points when you sign up for service and/or pay your bill.

The states include:

  • Illinois
  • Massachusetts
  • Maryland
  • New Jersey
  • Pennsylvania
  • Texas

When you use select energy companies in these states, you may be able to earn FREE flights just by paying your electric bill!

That’s what I love about discovering the joy of free travel; you learn how to earn a “return” on bills you are paying anyway. That makes that giant bill for winter heating or summer air conditioning a little more tolerable ;-).

How to Earn Southwest Points by Paying Your Electric Bill

Earn Southwest points by paying your electric bill

There are several energy companies across the U.S., who allow homeowners and renters to earn Southwest points by paying their electric bill.

Here are 2 companies that offer the deal:

1. Reliant Energy

Texas residents who are new Reliant customers who sign up for Reliant Energy’s Reliant Secure 24 plan, which essentially locks in fixed pricing for 24 months, can earn 15,000 BONUS Southwest points (Note: BONUS points DO NOT qualify for the Southwest Companion Pass but CAN be used to book free flights on Southwest) when signing up for the plan and another 500 additional points (non-bonus) each month for 24 months.

That’s 27,000 Southwest points over 24 months — WHAT A DEAL! I’m wishing I lived in Texas right about now :).

It can take between 8 to 12 weeks for the points to credit to your account.
