Southwest has announced that they are ditching peanuts as one of their free snack options on flights. They are making the switch to protect customers who suffer from peanut allergies.

On the Southwest Air Community they said, “Although peanuts are very much a part of our Company’s heritage and have always been part of Southwest Airlines’ identity, it became clear after careful evaluation that the risks of serving peanuts outweigh the rewards.”

I am pretty sad about this, as I’ve been eating peanuts on airplanes since I was a young kiddo flying between my mom’s house in Kentucky and my dad’s house in Atlanta. I just associate peanuts with airplanes, and I especially liked Southwest’s honey roasted peanuts.

But I do understand it’s a safety issue for people with severe peanut allergies.

They have said they will instead serve pretzels, though we have gotten all kinds of snacks recently on Southwest planes like Wheat Thins, Nabs and more.

What do you think about this switch?
