Great news that I know many of you have been waiting to hear from Southwest regarding the extension of the Southwest Companion Pass!
Southwest Extends Companion Pass for 2019 Through December 2021
Southwest announced they will extend the 2019 Southwest Companion Pass through December 31, 2021 for those who had a Pass set to expire on December 31, 2020.
Previously, they had extended it through June 2021 only.
If you earned a Companion Pass in 2020, then it won’t expire until December 31, 2021 and this extension does not affect you.
What Is the Southwest Companion Pass?
The Southwest Companion Pass requires you to earn 125,000 qualifying points and is valid from the time you earn all the points until the END of the FOLLOWING year.
It allows you to bring 1 person with you free (aside from the $5.60 government security fees) on ALL Southwest flights you take for the life of the pass.
What About Passes Earned in 2020?
Southwest has said they WILL NOT extend the 2020 or 2021 Companion Passes, since they helped flyers earn those with a bonus 25,000 Companion Pass-qualifying points in both 2020 and 2021.
But I personally feel like the Southwest Companion Pass is an amazing gift that no other airlines offer, or come even close to offering, so I’m grateful to have it at all.
In fact, I usually earn my pass at the end of a year, so it’s only good for a year anyway.
The way I teach earning the Southwest Companion Pass allows you to re-earn it as often as you need (it’s not very hard if you follow my process!), I typically earn one every single year and that’s without applying for any new credit cards.
Southwest has also extended A-List and A-List Preferred status.
Everyone Gets 25,000 Rapid Rewards Points Toward a Companion Pass “Free”
Additionally, Southwest announced that they would be giving everyone a “boost” of 25,000 Southwest points that qualify for the Southwest Companion Pass in 2021.
They also did this in 2020.
These CANNOT BE USED to book flights unfortunately, but WILL only qualify for the Companion Pass.
I did have one reader who told me he’d been granted Companion Pass status, but knew he didn’t yet have all the points required. I guess this is what put him over the top!
Lastly, you are eligible for these additional points and for the extended pass if you opened a Rapid Rewards account on or before December 31, 2020.
You don’t need to take any further action to receive these benefits and they are supposed to be completed in the “coming weeks.”
You WILL NOT see these points in your main Rapid Rewards points balance, but rather on the My Account page under your Southwest Companion Pass dial.
How to Earn the Southwest Companion Pass
So if you don’t hold a Companion Pass, but think you’d like to (why wouldn’t you?! :)), this will give you a head start on earning one.
The Southwest Companion Pass requires you to earn 125,000 qualifying points in one calendar year, so you’d need to earn the other 100,000 points by Dec. 31, 2021. That would give you a pass good through the end of 2022.
The Southwest Companion Pass itself is worth at least $6,000 if you use it to fly 6 times a year as my family of 4 does, and consider the value of the 125,000 points you’ll earn along the way that you can ALSO use to book free flights (value of $1,850 alone).
If you’d like personal help earning it, I highly recommend joining my Families Fly Free membership program, where I personally walk your family through my simple process to make flying free a lifestyle.
If you have questions about the program, let me know!
