As we approach the end of the year and you’re deciding whether to go for the Southwest Companion Pass now and try to earn all your points by December 31 (otherwise, your points don’t count and you have to start over next year) OR wait and start earning your point next year, this is a question that has come up: Can I apply for the Southwest Rapid Rewards cards now but meet the minimum spend in 2018?
The answer is yes. You can go ahead and apply for two of the three cards, currently earning you 50,000 Rapid Rewards points on one and 40,000 Rapid Rewards points on the other, now. But, unless you think you can reach the 110,000 Rapid Rewards points required to earn the Southwest Companion Pass, so one person can fly free with you for up to two years, by the end of 2017, make sure you DO NOT meet the minimum spend until AFTER your credit card’s December close date (call and ask Chase if you are not sure what this is).
Because the 110,000 points required to reach Companion Pass status must be earned within ONE calendar year, you need to either earn them all by December 31, and it’s all getting a bit tight at this point (I would not risk it, as your points might not be credited in time), or wait and complete your minimum spend AFTER your December 2017 credit card close date. If you wait, then your Companion Pass will be valid through the remainder of 2018 AND ALL of 2019. That is a GREAT DEAL!
