Southwest Companion Pass

Earn 1300-1700 points and miles with a subscription to the New York Times!

Looking for some quick Southwest points that count toward the Southwest Companion Pass or that you can use for free flights? Here’s a deal!

Right now, the Southwest Rapid Rewards Shopping Portal is offering 1,600 points (the highest they offered this year so far was 1,300 points)and half off a 12-week digital subscription to the New York Times. Or, you could subscribe through American Airlines’ shopping portal to earn 2,200 AAdvantage (American’s loyalty program) miles.

Choose from Basic Digital Access (the cheapest at $7.50/month for 12 weeks, which is just more than $22), All Access (digital access + crossword on web and mobile, $12.50/month) or Home Delivery, which also gets you unlimited access to NYTimes.com (starting at ~$20/month for Sunday only).

So, your cheapest option is $22 for 1,600 Southwest points or 2,200 American miles.

To earn either, go to the airline’s shopping portals (linked above) and search New York Times. Click through to the offer and make your purchase within an hour or two to make sure you will be credited. Your points will be credited to your loyalty account in six to eight weeks, but usually within a couple days of purchase.

Don’t forget to cancel at the end of 12 weeks if you don’t want to pay an inflated price!

The Fine Print

Please note, this only works for new subscribers and the subscription must be active for 90 days. Only one subscription per household and not eligible for e-reader editions. If this excludes you, consider purchasing this as a gift using the recipient’s email address and mailing address.

I think this is a great deal. It would cost $60 to purchase 2000 points on Southwest, so this is significantly less.
