Discover Cashback Calendar: Save 5% on Rotating Categories
The Discover it Cashback Match credit card is a great way to save on travel expenses that you cannot pay with miles or points. This is one of my favorite cards, which I recommend in my Travel Credit Card Plan, because it has no annual fee and can net you savings on things for which there are typically no coupons.
Here is my review of Discover it Cashback Match.
By taking advantage of the Discover Cashback Calendar, which offers 5 percent cashback on rotating categories every quarter, you can score savings on items that don’t typically lend themselves to coupons. The second quarter category, which is 5% cash back at grocery stores, is ACTIVE, and you can now ACTIVATE the third-quarter category for restaurants, which kicks in July 1, 2018. Go ahead and do it now before you forget!
If you have a Discover it Cashback Match card, simply log into your account and then click on Rewards and 5% Cashback Bonus. Scroll down to the category you’d like to activate.
Second Quarter 5% Cash Back Category Now Active: Groceries
Right now, you can spend up to $1,500 April-June at grocery stores and earn 5% cash back, which would be a $75 savings. That is a hefty grocery store coupon! Pair that with other coupons (see my TODAY article on digital couponing basics in the modern age; I stopped clipping printable coupons a year or so ago and here’s why) and you can generate significant savings on your grocery bill.
Each quarter of the Discover Cashback Calendar, the credit card offers new categories of items that allow you to earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in purchases. If you are a card holder, you need to “activate” the bonus category each quarter usually about two months in advance.
Right now you can “activate” the third quarter category, which will be restaurants, one of my favorite categories! We used this on a trip to Walt Disney World to save on our dining expenses, which otherwise have no savings potential. Check out my posts on my top 3 tips for saving on dining at Disney World and the new mobile option to order food at some Disney World and Disneyland restaurants.
You’ll be able to activate fourth quarter categories on August 1, 2018.

Discover Cashback Calendar 2018 Categories
Here are the 5 percent cashback categories for 2018. For each quarter you can earn a maximum of $1500 cashback in the specified category.
January-March: Gas Stations and Wholesale Clubs (expired)
Some gas stations affiliated with superstores and supermarkets may not be eligible. TIP: Some readers like to purchase gas station gift cards, earn the 5% cashback and then continue to use the gift cards throughout the year.
April-June: Grocery Stores (currently activated)
Gas stations, supercenters, discount stores, warehouse clubs and convenience stores are NOT included in this category. This is for stand-alone grocery stores like Kroger, Ralph’s, Publix, Harris Teeter, etc.
July-September: Restaurants, (available for activation)
I LOVE this one! This is an easy way to save at restaurants, which rarely have coupons. Plus, enroll your Discover card in Southwest Rapid Rewards Dining and earn Southwest points for free flights, too, at no additional cost!
October-December: Amazon.com and Wholesale Clubs, Available for Activation on August 1, 2018
One of my favorite times of year to use the Discover it Cashback Match credit card is during Christmas and the holidays. In past years, Amazon.com has been the featured category for the Discover Cashback Calendar fourth quarter. We do lots of shopping at Amazon and find that other than Amazon’s sales, there are not a lot of easy ways to score a deal on this popular retail website.
Wholesale clubs get TWO quarters in 2018, so head to Costco, Sam’s Club, etc. for some shopping.
How to Activate the Discover Cashback Calendar Bonuses
To activate your Discover Cashback bonuses, log into your Discover credit card account at Discover.com. Next you will click on Rewards and then select 5% Cashback Bonus from the dropdown menu. This will bring up a screen with all the rotating categories in the Discover Cashback Calendar. Find the quarter you’d like to activate (you’ll only be able to activate upcoming featured categories) and select Activate. Done!
Then anytime you use your Discover card to pay for a purchase that qualifies as that category — say dining at a restaurant or purchasing an item on Amazon.com — it will automatically credit 5% back to your Discover card, which is available for use at the end of the credit card billing cycle.
At this point, you will be able to choose how you’d like to get your cash back. To do so, you will choose Rewards and then Redeem Rewards. You can then choose from:
- Depositing into your bank account
- Crediting to your Discover card bill
- An Amazon.com credit
- Gift cards for popular restaurants and stores with at least $5 free added to each card — This is a GREAT way to increase your savings!
- Donate to charity
We either deposit it directly into our bank account, credit to our discover bill or purchase a gift card for a store or restaurant we regularly use or patronize to extend our savings even further.
Another card that offers rotating cash back categories is Chase Freedom. Check out my Chase Freedom review. Or if you’d prefer to earn miles that you can use for travel on your Discover card, check out my Discover it Miles review.
