Ever heard the phrase “digital nomad”?
The idea of a “digital nomad” is someone who can earn money without being tied to a physical location, allowing them to travel as much as they want.

The “New Rich” Revolution
This concept first came to my attention when I read the life-changing book, “The 4-Hour Work Week” by Tim Ferriss. (Note: This is an affiliate link.)
Ferriss introduced a generation to the completely jaw-dropping idea that you don’t have to sit at a desk and work for the same company for 40 years, while saving up all your money and time for retirement.
Ferriss coined the term the “new rich,” which is a group of people he defined as enjoying the benefits of retirement NOW before it’s too late all while earning lots of money and working remotely.
I’m a serial entrepreneur, born into a family of entrepreneurs, so the idea of working for myself wasn’t new, but the idea of spending LESS time working and MORE time doing the things I love — all while earning more than I could sitting at a desk 40 hours a week was CERTAINLY a revolutionary idea for me.
Building an Online Business Today
Ferris’ book was written in the 2000s and his explanation of the HOW to earn a living remotely while traveling is a bit dated. He largely suggested selling a product via magazine ads and having a third-party fulfillment company handle the fulfillment and distribution.
That’s not the way of things today, but our opportunities to live as the “new rich” have become even more abundant and simple, though there are also a lot more people doing it, as well.
But that’s OK. There’s room for all of us!
Today, you can create your own “radio station” with a podcast broadcast free to the world, create your own “TV channel” on YouTube, or create your own “newspaper” with a blog and sell digital products like online courses, ebooks, printables and more directly to the consumer online. You can advertise to your specific audience on platforms like Facebook and find people searching for what you’re selling on Google.
You can also still sell a physical product on e-commerce and use companies like Amazon to fulfill the orders or you can sell and ship them directly yourself on Etsy, ebay and Amazon.
Tools to Create Your Online Business
It’s also incredibly simple to build your online business with all the affordable tools at your disposal.
SiteBuilderReport says that shopify.com is the best for e-commerce sites. In fact, for a business I started last year that required selling a digital item (not related to Go to Travel Gal), I used Shopify to set up my “store” within just one day and was able to start taking orders. Amazing!
ConvertKit is an outstanding way to create and manage an email list, while sites like Kajabi make it simple to create and sell an online course on any topic you want to teach.
If you want to start a podcast, subscribe to Transistor.fm for just $29 month, and poof, you’ve instantly got a podcast with all the technical details handled!
Living the Digital Nomad Life
All of these tools make it easy to operate an online business from anywhere in the world.
I love working remotely! What’s better than sitting on the screened porch of your vacation rental doing some work while listening to the waves crash? Or looking out the window of your hotel in Paris, gazing at the Eiffel Tower while writing a blog post about France? Or recording a podcast from the High Line in New York City?
Working just doesn’t get any better than that.
Many of these tools let you schedule or automate, so your business is on autopilot while you’re touring the Colosseum (see my post on 50 Magical Things to Do in Rome!), hiking the Rocky Mountains or riding Space Mountain at Walt Disney World.
This is what Ferriss means when he says live your retirement NOW. Work less per week, make the same (or MORE) money and spend that time you would have been working, traveling and doing all the things you love instead.
Don’t wait until you’re 60 or 70 when you may not physically even be able to do those things any longer. Do it NOW! You won’t regret it ;-).
