Chase Freedom is a great cash back credit card that allows you to earn up to 5% cash back on rotating categories each quarter. The Chase Freedom Categories for 2018 for the fourth quarter, October through December, are now active and include wholesale clubs, department stores (great for holiday shopping!) and Chase Pay (a way to pay for items if you have a Chase account or credit card).
–> Looking for Chase Freedom Categories for 2019? You’ll find them here.
This card is similar to the Discover it Cashback Match card, which also offers 5% cash back on rotating categories each quarter. I enjoy these types of cards because they make it easy to score savings on things that may not ordinarily lend themselves to coupons.
For Chase Freedom, you can also opt to earn Chase points—if you hold Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserve—instead of cashback which can be used for free travel.
Who doesn’t want cash back or free travel?!

Chase Freedom Categories 2018: Fourth Quarter
Chase Freedom’s fourth quarter categories for October through December are now active. The categories include:
- Department stores
- Wholesale Clubs (Sam’s Club, Costco)
- Chase Pay
About Chase Pay
Chase Pay is very similar to PayPal or Apple Pay in that it allows you to pay for an item via your phone from one of your Chase accounts (checking, credit cards, etc.). You’ll first need to download the Chase Pay “app” on your smartphone and then connect it to your Chase account.
Chase Pay also frequently offers discounts at select retailers when you use it so you may be able to “stack” a retailer discount with your 5% cash back to get even MORE savings!
How Chase Freedom Works
When you pay with your Chase Freedom card, you earn 5% cashback on up to $1,500 spent total for the quarter. That nets you $75 in savings.
Before you can earn your 5% cash back, you need to “activate” the category, which if you already hold Chase Freedom, you can do here.
Discover’s fourth quarter categories also includes wholesale clubs, but even better, it includes AMAZON, a place most of us will be spending a lot of time over the Christmas season.
About Chase Freedom
Chase Freedom currently offers $150 bonus after spending $500 within the first three months of account opening.
In addition to the 5% cash back on rotating categories, you also earn 1% cash back on all other purchases.
Your cash back rewards NEVER EXPIRE.
There is NO annual fee.
Chase Freedom also has a 0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and balance transfers, which increases to 17.24%-25.99% afterward. There is a balance transfer fee of 5% of the balance or $5, whichever is higher. I prefer Chase Slate as the best balance transfer card, as it has 0% interest and NO balance transfer fees!
How the Cash Back Feature Works
Chase Freedom actually earns you “points” with 100 points=$1. So, instead of getting the cash back, if you hold either Chase Sapphire Preferred (my FAVORITE travel credit card) or Chase Sapphire Reserve (click on each to read my reviews of each card), you can transfer your points to your Sapphire card in Chase Ultimate Rewards.
These can then be converted to Southwest points, British Airways Avios, United miles, etc.
So your $500 cashback could actually be converted to 50,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points. When transferred to Southwest, 50,000 points can go A LONG WAY when you combine it with the Southwest Companion Pass (which lets one person fly free with you, effectively DOUBLING the value of every point; download my free guide on how to earn the pass below). Many Southwest flights are 7,500 points or less round-trip — and not just between close cities!
