We’ve been wondering when/if the the 60,000-point offers on the Southwest personal credit cards will go away. I was able to confirm with Chase today that the offers end on October 4. This is for the personal cards only, which includes Premier and Plus.
For those of you trying to take advantage of these bonuses in order to earn a 2018 Southwest Companion Pass, which lets one person fly free with you for up to two years, that would be good through the END of 2019, this presents a condundrum.
You could wait until the very last day to apply for the offer — October 4 — and wait to complete your minimum spend between Jan. 1-4, 2018 (though the 4th is cutting it a bit close for my taste). You have only 3 months to complete the minimum spend FROM THE TIME YOU ARE APPROVED for the card, so it would have to be complete by January 4, 2018.
However, because points qualifying for the Southwest Companion Pass must be earned in ONE CALENDAR YEAR from Jan. 1-Dec. 31, you don’t want your bonus points to hit your account THIS YEAR if you want to earn the pass NEXT YEAR.
If you are close to earning the pass and have a bunch of qualifying points already — and only need one more card to get to your 110,000 – I say go ahead and knock that puppy out this year. You’ll have use of the pass ALL NEXT YEAR and then you can earn it again the following year or have a spouse earn it instead.
