If you are hoping to earn a Southwest Companion Pass, an amazing perk that lets one person fly free with you from the time you earn it until the END of the following year, early in 2019, you can start applying for Southwest credit cards NOW to help you earn that pass as early as possible.
Since the Southwest Companion Pass is good from the time you earn it until the END of the FOLLOWING year, a 2019 Companion Pass will be good through the END of 2020. So it’s to your advantage to earn it as early in the year as possible, so you have that sucker for as long as you possibly can.
So… how do you earn it as early as possible?
Your Strategy to Earn a Southwest Companion Pass in Early 2019
The quickest way to a Southwest Companion Pass is to apply for ONE personal and ONE business Southwest credit card.
Right now, the personal cards earn 40,000 points after a $1,000 minimum spend and the business card earns you 60,000 points after a $3,000 minimum spend (both in three months).
That gets you 104,000 of the 110,000 points required to earn your pass, getting you about 95% of the way there.
You can start that ball rolling right now…
If you apply for a Southwest card right now, you can begin the process of completing the minimum spend, BUT you want to be SURE NOT to complete it until AFTER your December card close date.
Because you want your points to credit in 2019. ALL Southwest Companion Pass points must be earned in ONE CALENDAR YEAR between January 1 and December 31.
If you apply now, you can still meet the requirement that the minimum spend be completed in three months AND have it complete AFTER your December card close date so the points credit in January.
Thanks for using the TRAVEL CREDIT CARDS link in the main menu above for your card applications. This allows me to earn commission to help support the blog, so I can continue to bring you great information FREE. Thanks for taking this step!
Why Start Now?
Another reason to start the ball rolling if you’re going to apply for ONE personal and ONE business (you can now only hold ONE Southwest personal card, so applying for TWO personal cards no longer works), is you need to separate your card applications by at least 30 days, otherwise Chase will decline you for too many applications too close together.
Apply for one now and the second 30 days later.
Finish both minimum spends AFTER your December card close dates or in early January just to be sure.
And you’ll have those 104,000 points in your account come early January.
How to Earn the Remaining 6,000 Points
The easiest ways to quickly earn those remaining 6,000 points, which you’ll need to do ON or AFTER Jan. 1, 2019, is through:
- Additional spending on your Southwest cards
- Rapid Rewards Shopping (Check out my weekly Best Rapid Rewards Shopping Deals)
- SouthwestHotels.com – Book a hotel through this portal and earn up to 10,000 points per night
Bada bing, bada boom. You’ve got yourself a Companion Pass good through the end of 2020!
